P Sachidanandan, who writes under the assumed name of Anand, is an intellectual and philosophic countenance of the Malayalam novel arena. His prose provides greater insight in to the minds of common man. Anand was born in Irinjalakkuda, but spent his adult life all over India and it is precisely these practical experiences that prompted him to express the ideas of diverse cultural backgrounds through his writings.

His novels ‘Alkoottam’; ‘Govarthante Yatrakal’; 'Utharayanam', 'Abhayaarthikal', ‘Marubhoomikal Undaakunnathu’ etc are great contributions to Malayalam literature. His first novel ‘Alkoottam’ was published in 1956.

His firm belief in simplicity and the assumption that the true creative literary work is not basically for cornering awards but for social upliftment made him reject awards like Yashpal award and Kerala Sahithya Academy award.

‘Poojyam’ is his first short story and it was published in ‘Malayala Rajyam Varika’ in 1960. He also wrote five short stories including ‘Veedum Thadavum’. Presently he lives with his family in New Delhi.

Anand was born at Irinjalakkuda in 1936.  His father was a Primary School Teacher in Irinjalakuda. His childhood and school days were spent in Irinjalakkuda.

In 1958, he took his Degree in Civil Engineering from Thiruvananthapuram Engineering College. Anand started his career as an engineer in Mumbai. Then he worked in several places including Porbandar in Gujarat. He had also spent some time in the Indian military.

A man of immense experience, he retired as a planning director from the Central Water Commission, New Delhi. Anand wrote his first Novel ‘Aalkkoottam’ in 1956. ‘Marana certificate’ and ‘Abhayarthikal’ also came during this time-period. His short story ‘Gowardhanante Yathrakal’ bagged the Kendra Sahithya Academy award in the year 1997.

He was bestowed with Yashpal award, Vayalar award, Samastha Kerala Sahitya Parishad award, and Abu-Dhabi Malayalee Samajam award. However, he rejected the Yashpal award and Kerala Sahitya Academy award.

Power, its various incarnations, and the helplessness of the common people were the recurring story lines of Anand’s works. The novel ‘Marubhoomikal Undakunnathu’ is a touching portrayal of how the ruling class crucifies the innocent people to carry forward their vested interests.
