CRADLE OF AYUEVEDA
|
|
Malappuram,
literally means a terraced place atop the hills. The area
covered by the district was carved out of Kozhikode and
Palakkad districts in 1969. The Malappuram district is
bounded in the north by Kozhikode district, Wayanad district
and Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu, on the south by Palakkad
and Thrissur districts and on the west by Arabian sea
.
Malappuram district comprises of undulating hills
with innumerable streams that meander through these hills
and reaching the coconut fringed sea coast. These streams
at places are linked with the backwaters, facilitating
network of inland waterways. The hilly tracts have dense
forests and extensive teak plantations. A
large number of the district's population is engaged in
the field of agriculture. The main crops of the district
include paddy, coconut, arecanut, cashewnut, pepper, ginger,
pulses, banana, tapioca and rubber. Though Malappuram
is rich in natural resources the district is industrially
backward due to the lack of infrastructural facilities.
The district also lags behind in the standards
of literacy and education as compared to the high standards
prevalent in other districts of the state. But Malappuram
district has enriched the Kerala's cultural traditions
immensely. It has been a centre for Hindu Vedic
learning and teaching. Ponnani, the taluk headquarters,
is an important centre for education in the philosophy
of Islam.
