LAND OF BEACHES

Kasargod
is the northern-most district of Kerala. It was formed
on 24th May, 1984. The district is bounded by Karnataka
state in the north and east and Kannur district in the
south. Physiographically the district lies between Western
Ghats in the east and the Lakshadweep sea in the west.
The coastal regions of the beautiful district abound in
coconut and arecanut gardens while the midlands have extensive
paddy fields. The important crops in the hilly areas include
rubber, cashew and ginger. Fishing is the prime source
of livelihood. The district is a land of fabulous fantasies,
it abounds in sacred temples with splendid architecture,
majestic forts, rivers, undulating hills, verdant valleys
and beautiful unspoilt beaches and is fastly emerging
as a major tourist destination. The rich natural resources
of the district have yet to be fully tapped. There is
only one major industrial estate which is located in Kasargod
town. The major industries are involved in the manufacture
of handloom, beedi, tiles and coir products. Beedi rolling
is an important occupation in the district.

Bekal
Fort
It
is
believed to have been built by Shivappa Naik of the Ikkeri
dynasty in 1650, some experts credit the Kolathiri Rajas
for the construction of the fort. In 18th century the
fort came under Tipu Sultan.The mosque near the fort is
believed to have been built by him. Later on the fort
was captured by the British. The observation towers of
the fort afford breath taking views of the scenic surrounding
and the beautiful Bekal beach. The historical Bekal Beach
is being developed as an International Tourist destination.

Ajanur
The
temple town is located 5 km. from Kanhangad in Hosdrug
taluk. The famous Madiyam
Kovilakam Temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali.
The ancient temple has intricate wood carvings on
Palazhimadhanam,
Sitaswayamvaram and Dakshayagam.
The annual nine day festival of 'pattutsavam'
is celebrated here. Various cultural and religious
programmes are held during the festival. The village
also has 13 mosques and one church. There is also
an 'Anandasram', founded in 1939 by Swami Ramdas,
a great Vaishnava saint. The

Kumbla
Kumbla
was the seat of Kumbla Kings who once ruled the southern
part of the Tuluva country which extended over the
Kasargod taluk. Kumbla, 14 km. nort west of Kasargod
is set on a picturesque lagoon separated from the
sea by a sand pit and connected by a narrow channel.
The Sree
Parthasarathy Temple at Mujankavu is the most
important temple here. It is believed that a holy
dip in the temple tank after three pradakshinams
to the tank and offering a handful of navadhanyams,
the body is relieved of all warty growths. Gopalakrishna
Temple and Ananthapura temple are other important
shrines in the town.

The
towering cliffs between the Kappil Beach
and the Chandragiri fort are another
splendid site for viewing the sunset.

from the Kappil village.

The
beautiful beach is at a walking distance
from the Bekal fort.

Chandragiri
Fort
The
17th century fort is located 10 km.
north of Bekal. The square shaped fort
is set amidst the Lakshadweep
Sea and Chandragiri river. It is an
excellent sunset point. There is a mosque
and ancient Kizhur Sastha Temple located
nearby.

Bela
Located
15 km. north of Kasargod, the little
town is known for the oldest church
in the district. The church 'Our Lady
of Sorrows' was constructed in 1890.

Manjeswaram
This cashew rich town is the
birth place of M. Govind Pai, a renowned
writer of Kannada literature and poetry.
The Srimad Anantheswar temple or the
Mahalingeshwar temple is an important
shrine attracting pilgrims from all
over the country.

Nileswaram
The
cultural centre of the Kasargod
district. There are several 'Kavus',
where nature, God and man commune
in serene silence. The Mannampurathu
Kavu is the most important.

Ananthapura
Situated
12 km. north east of Kasargod.
The 9th century temple set in
a rock cut lake, is the only lake
temple in Kerala. The temple is
believed to be the 'moolasthanam'
or the original seat of Ananthapadmanabha
of Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple
in Thiruvananthapuram.
