Alappuzha,
a tourist paradise gets the name by its geographical position
and physical features, as the word Alappuzha literally
means the land between the sea and the network of rivers
flowing into it. The water locked district has emerged
as one of the major tourist destination of the country,
as the unique backwaters are mesmerizing and cannot be
experienced in any other part of the country. The backwaters
are the real wealth of Kerala, and has immense untapped
tourist potential. The
district comprises of six taluks, with its headquarters
at Alappuzha. It is bounded on the north
by Ernakulam district, on the east by Kottayam and Pathanamthitta
districts, on the south by Kollam district
and on the west by Arabian
Sea. It is also an important centre of Christianity since 1st
century, as it is believed that the church at Kothamangalam,
was one of the seven churches founded by St.Thomas, one
of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ who preached Christianity
in Southern India.The
district is a sandy strip of land woven by lagoons and
an array of rivers, canals and lakes fit for boat cruise.
The prominent rivers are Achankovil, Pamba and Manimala.
The Vembanad lake covering an area of 204 sq. km. stretches
from Alappuzha to Kochi and the Kayamkulam lake with an
area of 59.57 sq. km. extends to both the districts of
Alappuzha and Kollam, these lakes are widely used for
the inland water transport of cargo and passengers in
the region. Alappuzha has been an important trading and
commercial centre since time immemorial. It is also a
major centre of coir and carpet industry. The economy
of the district is based on agriculture and marine products.

Alappuzha
Alappuzha,
the'Venice of the East', has emerged as a major tourist
attraction due to the amazing backwaters and renowned
snake boat races. Nehru
trophy Boat
Race
, the most important tourist event of Alappuzha. Boats
sponsored by different villages compete fiercely in the
competition. The highlight of this prestigious
event is "Chundan
Vallam",
these 130 feet long snake boats have about 100
rowers, 4 helmsmen, and 25 cheer leaders decorated
with colourful silk umbrellas. Thousands of spectators
from all over the world watch avidly from the banks. Tickets
for the race are available on the day from numerous ticket
stands on the way to the lake where race is held.
The race is now repeated during the tourist season
on the third day of the Great Elephant March in mid January,
and is called
as 'Tourism Snakeboat Race'.

The
Alappuzha-Kollam Backwater trip
The trip is organised
by ATDC. The journey begins at 10.30 am., and reaches
Kollam at 6.00 pm. The boat passes through exotic
locations and gives a close view of the countryside.

Christian
pilgrim centre near Cherthala, 22 km.
north of Alappuzha. The St. Andrews
Church here was built by Portuguese
missionaries. Annual feast of St. Sebastian
is held in the month of January.

Mannarasala
It
is located near Haripad on the Alappuzha
Kollam route. The town is famous for Sree
Nagaraja Temple, dedicated to the King of
Serpents. Pilgrims from all over the country
assemble here during the two day annual festival.

Pathiramanal
The
verdant island located in the Vembanad
Lake is the first island resort of the
State. The island is accessible only
by boat from Kumarakom and Muhamma.

Krishnapuram
Palace
The
magnificent palace is situated 47 kms.
from Alappuzha on the way to Kollam.
The palace is a master, piece of Kerala
architecture with gabled roofs, dormer
windows and narrow corridors. A museum
inside the palace, displays antique
sculptures and paintings.

Ambalapuzha
The
pilgrim centre 14 km. from Alappuzha
is renowned for the Sri Krishna Temple.
The temple is well known for its spectacular
architecture and 'palpayasam'
a sweet milk porridge offered to the
deity.
Karumadi
The
village near Ambalapuzha is known for
9th or 10th century black granite idol
of Lord Buddha known as Karumadi Kuttan.

Kuttanad
Region
It
is perhaps the only region in
the world where
farming
is
done below sea level. The boat
trip to Changanasserry
passes through this beautiful and
fertile region.

Mullakkal
Rajarajeswari Temple
The
temple is dedicated to the Goddess
Rajarajeswari. The nine day 'Navrathri'
festival celebrated is of
special significance. Another
important festival of the temple
is 'Thaipooyakavadi' .

The
beautiful beach is
popular among the locales as
well as the visitors. The
Seaview park here has
boating facilities.

Kochi, Chennai and Bokaro.
Road:
Total road length within
the district is 1064.84
kms. Alappuzha City is located
on the NH 47 and is well
connected by road with all
important towns of the Southern
India.
Boat Services: Boat
services available through
the backwaters to Kollam,
Changanassery, Kottayam,
Kochi, Kumarakom, Chengannur
etc. Although the time taken
by boat is more but it is
an enchanting experience.
